How to Weigh Your Cannabis Grow

When growing cannabis there are a few steps after harvest that need to be done. One of those crucial steps is to get a total weight for the harvest. Whether you’re growing at home or a large industrial scale cannabis farm it is important to know the production of your crop. Weighing your cannabis will let you know not only how much you have but how successful your nutrients and grow was in general.

How is Weed Broken into Measurements

1 eighth = ⅛-ounce = 3.5 grams

  • This is the most common found weight at dispensaries.

1 quarter = ¼-ounce = 7 grams

  • Quarters can be found at dispensaries as well.

1 half = ½-ounce = 14 grams

  • A less common weight found in dispensaries, but a good amount for a regular cannabis consumer.

1 ounce = 28 grams

  • A good quantity of cannabis for a person who consumes cannabis every day, multiple times a day.

1 pound = 16 ounces = 448 grams\

  • Not usually reserved for the consumer market. More often pounds are sold to dispensaries by industrial grows for resale.

How Many Grams Are In Your Typical Harvest?

Home Grow

(home grows will typically harvest between 1-4 ounces)

Depending on the size of your home grow you could yield somewhere between a few ounces and a pound. This all depends on the amount of space you have for your plants to grow, as well as how many plants you have. Other factors include nutrients used, pruning methods, and growth schedule.

Industrial Grow

(could range into harvesting of hundreds of pounds)

Industrial grows are large scale company based grows that adhere to strict guidelines allowing for sale in the legal cannabis market. These large farm scale grows can yield hundreds of pounds of cannabis. Due to their large size, industrial grows are usually tended to by an entire team of growers.

How Do You Weigh Your Harvest?

Home Grow

  • Using a kitchen scale to weigh your nugs
    • Get a large light bowl and place it on the scale.
    • Tare the weight of the bowl to zero out the scale.
    • Place cannabis buds in a bowl to get weight.
    • If there isn’t enough room write down the weight of the first bowl and weigh the left over amounts.
    • Add up weights of multiple bowls.

Industrial Grow

  • Using an industrial scale for weighing pounds of cannabis
    • Place cannabis in large bins.
    • Put the bins on an industrial scale.
    • Add up weights of each bin.
